On the 20th anniversary of the Whitlam dismissal Paul Kelly conducted a series of interviews that revisited the crisis based on fresh revelations – he produced further material highlighting the Governor-General’s irresponsible solution of dismissal, the scale of Whitlam’s tactical blunders and folly in his mismanagement of Sir John Kerr and Fraser’s skill and cunning in his manipulation of the Governor-General to win his objective. The book coincided with the author’s presentation of a special ABC Four Corners program reviewing the dismissal after 20 years.
Reviews
“November 1975 is a splendid contribution to that historical record. Analytically and interpretatively it is undoubtedly the best I have come across so far…both Whitlam and Fraser as well as Kerr are reviewed critically but I feel fairly by Kelly who in all cases adduces substantial evidence to back his views. Kelly’s account is increasingly riveting as it rises to its climax” – the Governor-General, Bill Hayden.
